Mark Wells – Peoples Power Africa
Resume:
Mark Wells is an Industrial Engineer with 15 years experience in systems design and broad based project management and cross industry consulting experience, including strategic planning, project coordination, feasibilities studies and what-if analysis for over US$1.8 billion in projects implemented by the Intel Corporation over a period of four years. Mark entered the renewable energy sector in 2005 as the project manager during the implementation planning phase of the Kuyasa Low Income Housing Thermal Upgrade, the first Gold Standard Clean Development Mechanism project in Africa which involved the retrofit of 2309 low cost houses to include solar water heaters, thermal ceilings and CFL lighting. His engagement in the renewable energy sector then extended into the development and implementation of a number of integrated bioenergy and nutrient recycling systems.
He has contributed to a number of feasibility and design reports for integrated biogas and zero waste systems for rural and urban contexts including: the Fiji National Biogas Implementation Plan; an assessment of the potential for integrated biogas developments in the Chris Hani District Municipality; quantification of bioenergy potentials for Governments ‘Working for Energy Programme’ which is housed at the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI); design for community biogas digesters for the IZWA and the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) Integrated Water Resource Management projects on the West Coast; the business & implementation plans for a 250kWe Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system fuelled with invasive wattle at Ndakana for ASPIRE (the development agency for the Amathole district municipality); as well as the project management of the ongoing technical feasibility study on a integrated bioenergy and resource recovery hub (biogas and biomass) at 2nd Creek in East London to marine outfall for the DBSA and the Buffalo City Municipality.
Mark has been the lead planning, design and project manager for the implementation and commissioning of a number of integrated biogas digester systems including: a baffle reactors and UASB reactors systems for the 100% recirc mariculture system for the Green Harvest Project; United Nations GEF funded tube digester system in KwaZulu Natal; lagoon digesters for small farmers; a hybrid AIPS biogas & digester algal system at Amatole Berries Farm; and an integrated biogas and wind powered high rate algal treatment system at the Three Crowns School in the Chris Hani District Municipality.
