2.2 Abstracts of South African Workshop (March 2011)
2.2.6 Logistics and supply chain considerations for bioenergy production
Presenter:
Mark Wells
Peoples Power Africa
The presentation by Mark Wells from People’s Power Africa will focus on logistics and supply chain considerations for the business planning of bioenergy projects and will draw from three business cases, namely:
- A 250kWe gasifier CHP plant at Amabele fuelled by on invasive jungle wattle, community managed plantations (wattle and gum, including a bamboo to energy trial). The resultant heat and power to support the local Ndakana/Amabele agribusiness cluster. The project is a registered SANEFI working for energy project;
- A 1.2MWe Central Anaerobic Digester and CHP plant at Queenstown to co digest process local sewage sludge, pig manure, food waste, abattoir waste and ensilaged sweet sorghum.
- An integrated bioenergy and resource recovery hub at 2nd Creek (East London) which includes a 1.35MW gasifier & CHP plant fuelled on garden refuse as well as the 4MWCH4 biogas digester system that includes UASB reactors and a CSTR digesters fuelled by the co digestion of wastewater, sewage sludge, the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, abattoir waste, and the digestible fraction of garden refuge. Outputs of the system include biomethane, heat and power for use by the local industry and the sterilised digestate, biochar and algal outputs will be co-composted and used in agriculture and gardens within the greater Buffalo City Metro.
The presentation will briefly explore these three systems and provide an outline of the feedstock logistics and processing requirements including cultivation, harvesting, transport, processing and storage. The presentation will also outline the processing, upgrading and distribution requirement related to the energy and nutrient outputs of each system.
