The South African Government has identified the Green Economy as one of the growth sectors in the National Growth Path. http://www.republic.org.nz/images/480px-Coat_of_arms_of_South_Africa.svg.png The objective is to create 300,000 jobs by 2020 in this sector.  To date there has been extremely limited penetration of green energy into the South African energy mix.  To achieve growth will therefore require significant changes and investment.  The IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) , a 70 year old state owned development financier has created a new Green Industries SBU (strategic business unit), that plans to invest R 25 billion over the next five years.  This encompasses:  Energy Efficiency; Renewable electricity (hydro, solar, wind); Renewable fuels (waste to energy, biomass, cogeneration, biogas); Liquid biofuels (bioethanol; biodiesel) and Related services (pollution controls, clean stoves).  An overview of these five areas will be presented, as regards the status and enabling and hindering factors.  The IDC financing options to facilitate and stimulate investment will be provided.  Focus will be placed on the Green fuels opportunities and criteria to achieve bankability.
