Research proposals led by ACP Partners have 2 key characteristics. They are

Drivers of ACP project research themes were:

  • Sustainability
  • Water.  A scenario of ‘peak water’ has major food security implications for continental Africa and other arid, water-poor regions. Sewerage and liquid bio-waste in Africa poses a formidable risk to human and environmental health through the dispersal of waterborne pathogens and toxic organic and inorganic compounds, but more than 80% of Africa is without conventional waste water treatment works and where these exist many are in disrepair, underperform or are overloaded.
  • Energy supply security and oil price volatility
  • Climate change mitigation

Two themes prevailed in particular:

  • Glycerol and biochemicals from halophytic (salt-loving) microalgae, and
  • Biogas and chemicals from agricultural and other wastes.

The 3 key elements of innovation processes to ensure successful use of research for impact:

  1. End-user involvement in research and innovation;
  2. Multi‐actor processes that foster interaction to get innovation into use and have impact; and
  3. Embedded-ness/ownership and interdependence of innovation processes in local institutional, policy and political contexts.

ACP Partner-led projects were multi-disciplinary by nature and multi-type by stakeholder.
